The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced in a press release that it has suspended the permit for FG LA LLC’s proposed plant in St. James Parish, Louisiana, known as the “Sunshine Project”. All works regarding the project have come to a halt in accordance with the decision.
The move came after several lawsuits filed against the project by regional environmental groups, which claim that the proposed plant would double the pollution within the region. The Corps and FG LA will reportedly work together to decide whether the permit will be reinstated or revoked.
The $9.4 billion project’s first phase would include 1.2 million tons/year ethane-fed cracker, a 600,000 tons/year PDH plant and a PP unit, LLDPE and HDPE plants each with 400,000 tons/year capacity and a 900,000 tons/year ethylene glycol (EG) plant.
The second phase would consist of a second 1.2 million tons/year cracker, LLDPE and HDPE plants each with a capacity of 400,000 tons/year and another 900,000 tons/year ethylene glycol plant.
