08 Apr – Explosion at Formosa Plastics’ facility in Taiwan
According to media sources, an explosion occurred at Formosa Plastics Corp.’s No. 6 naphtha cracker complex in Mailao, Taiwan on April 7.
The explosion, which was heard more than 30 kilometers away, was followed by a second blast about 10 minutes later, and the fire caused by the blast was brought under control shortly after. The explosion reportedly stemmed from a leak in a pipeline, supplying LPG to the company’s aromatics complex.
However, the media reported no casualties at the time of publication.
According to an agent operating in Taiwan, an 870,000 tons/year PX unit at the site has been affected by the blast, while there was no official confirmation so far. The No. 3 aromatics complex also includes a 640,000 tons/year of benzene line.
