Formosa starts up downstream plant before cracker launch

Taiwan's Formosa Petrochemical has begun downstream operations. The downstream plant will receive feedstock from its new naphtha cracker, which will come on stream this month. The 12 million tpa, which will be the biggest in Asia, is set to start processing naphtha by the end of the month. The cracker would begin producing ethylene about a month after the naphtha is fed into the cracker.

Mitsubishi to increase propylene capacity

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation will establish an olefins conversion unit (OCU) at its Kashima works with a propylene capacity of 150,000 tpa. The construction will start in December 2007 and will complete in November 2008. The expansion is to satisfy the high propylene demand. The OCU will utilize ABB Lummus' olefins conversion technology to convert 50,000 tpa of ethylene and 100,000 tpa of butane into propylene.

Eastern Petrochemical to launch new ethylene project

Sharq will venture in a new ethylene project in Saudi Arabia. This is a joint venture between SABIC and a consortium of Japanese firms. An ethane cracker with a capacity of 1.3 M tpa of ethylene for feeding 700,000 tpa of ethylene glycol, 400,000 tpa linear low-density polyethylene and 400,000 tonnes/y high-density polyethylene will be set up.

CNPC signs deal for NW China ethylene project

China National Petroleum Corporation signed a deal with Shaanxi provincial government to build an ethylene plant in northwestern China with an annual capacity of 1 million metric tons. The ethylene plant will be built in Yan'an city.

Saudi Aramco, a fully-integrated, global petroleum enterprise and the world's leading energy supplier, and The Dow Chemical Company, the world's leading science and technology company, providing innovative chemical, plastic and agricultural products and services to consumers around the globe, today announced the signing of a detailed Memorandum of Understanding regarding the construction, ownership and operation of a world-scale chemicals and plastics production complex in Saudi Arabia, named the Ras Tanura Integrated Project. The parties will now enter the final negotiation phase for the formation of a joint venture company to build, own and operate the facility to be located near Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. The Ras Tanura petrochemical joint venture will be operationally integrated with Saudi Aramco's Ras Tanura Refinery complex and its Ju'aymah gas processing plant, two of the largest facilities of their kind in the world. The latter two facilities will supply feedstock to the joint venture and continue to be owned and operated by Saudi Aramco.
